Yes given the accidents we have on our roads the legal limit is 100km/h maximum.
Please stick to the left too.
This site is clearly not being monitored. Further, it seems to have been set up by someone who has never been to NZ.
This site ranks high in Google and as a NZ resident I'm terrified.
The open road LIMIT is 100kmph (62mph) but even on the main state highway, express and motor ways you still have many areas that are 70kmph and all the town's and cities are 50kmph (yes you go through lots of them) so the drive from Wellington to Auckland is expected by kiwis to take at least 6 hours for the perfect trip but plan for 7 or more.
New Zealand has some great driving roads but you are never going to average 70mph here. The speed limit for a start is usually 100kph (60 mph approx). Giving a statistic like that is very misleading.
I thought the same thing Hayley, and despite your post over 6 months ago they haven't updated their estimate. Apart from major highways and expressways, New Zealand roads just aren't suitable to even drive at 100km/h especially not for first-time foreign drivers driving on the Left!
I can't believe you are recommending an average speed of in your blog when the legal limit is 100km/hour in New Zealand!!!! That dangerous advice to foreign travelers!!!
