Perhaps, when the East Coast Main Line has the log awaited in-cab signalling applied, and trains dating back as far as 1991 can then run at their intended speed of 140mph then, as demonstrated previously, 3 hours 30 mins becomes a viable journey time. In addition, the new LNER trains, Azumas are also designed to cruise at 140mph, and with local trains already able to run at 110mph on ungraded slow lines will help considerably.

Google Maps (which provides fairly accurate travel times, calculated using a "travelling salesman" analysis of different routes, and adjusted for traffic, delays) offers 1.5 hours by air, 7:18 driving, under 9 hours by bus, and oddly, no train times. However, a quick check at LNER gives train time between 5 and 6 hours.

I cannot agree more with Jim Shaw on the map is one thing and in practice is what he explained given theres hair weather conditions and no major accidents or repairs.

Thank you Jim Shaw. My initial question that brought me to this site was "how long, and thusly how far by train.

Your suggested timings are misleading and could encourage drivers to break the law. Firstly, it's illegal to drive in the UK at 75mph, so this timing should be deleted completely from your table. Secondly, given the congestion on the southern section of the motorway; the fact that a lot of the road north of Newcastle is single carriageway which has a speed limit of 60mph; and the first 10 miles out of London and the last 10 miles into Edinburgh can easily take half an hour each, your suggestion of an "average" speed of 70 is again impractical and illegal. An average of 60 (with top speed 70 where applicable on dual carriageways / motorways) is just about doable providing you have two drivers for changeovers.
Also, to be more useful to potential travellers in planning their route, you should mention the flying time (1hr 30mins, + 30 mins tram-to-centre at Edinburgh and 15-45 mins by train/ underground or 1hr30mins driving from Central London); and also by train (4hr 20mins centre-to-centre) as these might be more pleasant alternatives to what is a rather gruelling drive. I've done it by all three methods!
